--- Philip Yancy, “Church: Why Bother?”

Moses' Essay on Local Church(1)

Third, my personal opinion, I think LRC is a role model for functioning as Body of Christ. Statistically, 90% of churches in U.S. have less than 100 or less members. Because of this reason, most churches cannot support pastor‘s family financially. And, this is one of the reasons why many churches close down in small towns because they cannot support pastors financially. Some churches have service through video, or visiting pastors preach two or three different churches on Sundays.

However, LRC starts as home church as in early Christianity. We have been grown up in the Christian culture & concept that it was not a proper church if there were no pastors or priest. However, I witnessed at LRC that all people can read, study, meditate bible and preach gospel. Isn’t it the reason why Martin Luther translated bible so that all people can read bible instead of a few limited number of priest can access to read bible?

In 21st century, education level is higher than any other previous generations. There are so many books, commentaries, and even we can easily get biblical, historical or theological answers through internet. Also, we can listen to all the best spiritual sermons or lectures through internet. I think this is what God is looking for in this generation. ― All people read, study and meditate God’s word and preach instead of passively listening of one pastor’s prepared sermon once a week. And I think this is the Priesthood of all believers in the bible, the Body of Christ ― all believers functioning as a body ― Apostles, Prophets, teachers, workers of miracles, Healing, help others, administration, and speaking tongues.

Fourth, LRC emphasize one Body of Christ. I haven’t seen any other church worshiping with different nationality, languages or cultures together. It is not easy thing at all to be one with people with different language or cultures. It is against our nature to be one with people who are different in culture or language. So, it is only Christ lives in us so that we only die every day on the cross, and Christ should be replace our nature. I understood this as a concept, but I saw that they do practice oneness at LRC. Another thing I noticed was that LRC people are very careful to express themselves. They are very conscious to express Christ instead of themselves.

So, it was a kind of fresh impact on me that the way they teach and practice biblically. And I see a brightness of future churches in LRC. Right now churches and church members are decreasing in U.S. and in S. Korea. However, LRC members are increasing worldwide. Especially, many young people are increasing at LRC. I asked a few college age young people how they came to LRC. They said they saw LRC was more evangelical and biblical church than any other denominational churches.

I am not trying to say that LRC is the only church God desires. LRC says LRC is not a completion of church but a road to a completion of church. I don’t think all other churches should be like LRC. I don’t think one will be a better Christian if one moves to LRC from other denominational churches. Many people may be growing better at different churches. Catholic has its own good aspect or denominational also has some good programs(?) or own roles for spiritual growth.

When Catholic was degraded, there were pure believers too. Also, there was reformation by Calvin and Martin Luther. When you read the church history, you can see the history repeats itself. Through degradation and reform, we can see more spiritual light. Sometimes, those who saw the spiritual light was accused as “cult” and persecuted or even martyred. Many pastors or believers consider our time is in spiritual degradation. In U.S. lately, about 2500 churches are closed yearly, and in S. Korea, about 500 churches close its doors every year. I don’t see this is not a negative phenomenon. If church grows with mixed-shamanism, politically, different Christian programs or emphasizing morality, it may not last long. Of course, some may accept Christ and experience the love of God in those churches. I don’t think those churches are not what God desires. Even though it may not be a bad things or bad churches, even though it may help somehow help bring people to Christ, I think there is a difference between God’s allowance and God’s desire. What I realized and confirmed at LRC was that church should be maintained grow with Life of Christ. The Life of Christ is not doctrine. The Life of Christ is our daily spiritual food and experience. When I learned this, I also pray for the Life of Christ can be my daily experience moment by moment not remains as a concept.

I think LRC understood and saw the vision of the Body of Christ more clearly than other denomination churches. In my memory, I haven’t heard or studied much about the Body of Christ in my previous church life. Maybe, the concept of the Body of Christ does not fit in traditional churches. Most LRC maintain about 100 or fewer members per church. If more than 100 members per church, it may not function properly as a Body. But, what if there are over 100 members? Then, there will be another meeting hall will be branched out in same locality. So, for example there are 4 meeting halls at different locations in Anaheim. And if all members get together in one location (once in a while), it will be over 400 members. It is similar to the concept of cell meeting at traditional churches. (If one cell gets bigger than more than 7 families, it branches out to another cell.) And, other churches help financially if new church starts at different locality. Also, it is encouraged members to go and help a new church if starts at nearby locality. LRC history in Taiwan has over 70 years, and LRC in US has been over 40 years. I heard from a brother visited Taiwan told me that some brothers and sisters in Taiwan LRC live as community life. One of the young men in Church in Cypress told me his grew up in Iowa and his family and other dozen LRC families lived together as a community when he was young. LRC is not Mennonites, but sometimes, they live together voluntarily because they understand deeper the Body and naturally practice the one Body of Christ. LRC never encourage or mention this kind of life, but it voluntarily composes these communities when they want to. However, most denominations churches are too individualistic.

A few years ago, one of the guest speaker from Korea bragged in his sermon that one sister from Kwangju (a city about 160 miles south west from Seoul) comes to his church every Lord’s day to attend Sunday service. I wondered why that pastor was so proud of the woman who rode a bus for more than 5 hrs for attending his church in Seoul. His church was a mega church with over 50,000 members, and there were hundreds of churches in KwangJu too. A sister who was a pastor and came to LRC one year earlier than me told me she only saw branches when she was in denomination, but now she sees a Body in LRC. Now, I started to understand a little about a Body too. That is the main difference between LRC and other denomination churches. If one prefers to attend Lord’s Day service, some fellowship, some bible study and believe that is enough for salvation, it might be O.K. to go to traditional church. But, most members at LRC understand the meaning of the Church deeper than that.

Long time ago, Rev. Dong Ho Kim from Korea came to Bethel Korean Church for 3 day evangelical meetings. I still remember one of the stories he spoke in the meeting. One time, he accompanied one of the candidates for an elder candidate in his church for Elder test. There were some other candidates from other church for interview. While waiting outside for entrance, one of the candidates jokingly asked a question to Rev. Kim, “What is the correct answer if the interviewer asks a question who is the Head of the Church?” Rev. Kim said he also jokingly answered, “If the interviewer is a pastor, say it is a pastor, if the interviewer is an elder, and then say it is an elder.” I think this is reality of current situation of most churches, especially in Korea.

I tried to explain briefly, but ended up in 10 pages. If you have any opinion or advice, please correct me. I am still in learning process, and I need to see more light to grow. Also, I believe that when we see the Body of Christ more clearly, then we can come together as one body as God desires, not dividing as Catholic, Greek Orthodox or different protestant denominations. And I pray for that. Lastly, I would like to finish my testimony with a story form Philip Yancy’s book ―

The composer Igor Stravinsky once wrote a new piece that contained a difficult violin passage. After several weeks of rehearsal the solo violist came to Stravinsky and said that he could not play it. He had given it his best effort but found the passage too difficult, even unplayable. Stravinsky replied, “I understand that. What I am after is the sound of someone trying to play it. Perhaps something similar is what God had in mind with the church.

I remember hearing a similar illustration from Earl Palmer, a pastor who was defending the church against critics who dismissed it for its hypocrisy, its failures, and its inability to measure up to the New Testament’s high standards. Palmer, a Californian at the time, deliberately chose a community known for its cultural unsophistication. “When the Milpitas High School orchestra attempts Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the result is appalling,” said Palmer, “I wouldn’t be surprised if the performance made old Ludwig roll over in his grave despite his deafness. You might ask, ‘Why bother?’ Why inflict on those poor kids the terrible burden of trying to render what the immortal Beethoven had in mind? Not even the great Chicago Symphony Orchestra can attain that perfection.

“My answer is this: The Milpitas High School orchestra will give some people in that audience their only encounter with Beethoven’s great Ninth Symphony. Far from perfection, it is nevertheless the only way they will hear Beethoven’s message.” I remind myself of Earl Palmer’s analogy whenever I start squirming in a church service, Although we may never achieve what the composer had in mind, there s no other way for those sounds to be heard on earth. --- Philip Yancy, “Church: Why Bother?(End)

Moses' Essay on Local Church(2)

First Question, why called “Local Church”? - When I heard “Local Church” meant there should be a church in one locality. I thought there should be only one “Local Church” in a city. So, I imagined that it would be a one mega church building instead of many small church buildings. But, later I understood it meant they called “church in Ephesus” for all the churches in Ephesus. There were no different name churches in early Christianity. There were no denominations or divided churches in early Christianity. They only called the church name by the name of locality.

Second Question, Why “local church” criticize denominations? - This was most bothered question to me.

So, I searched what other denominational theologians say about denominations. Most evangelical theologians also acknowledge denomination is non-biblical. Following is an article regarding denominations:

The rise of denominations within the Christian faith can be traced back to the Protestant Reformation, the movement to “reform” the Roman Catholic Church during the 16th century, out of which four major divisions or traditions of Protestantism would emerge: Lutheran, Reformed, Anabaptist, and Anglican. From these four, other denominations grew over the centuries.

The Lutheran denomination was named after Martin Luther and was based on his teachings. The Methodists got their name because their founder, John Wesley, was famous for coming up with “methods” for spiritual growth. Presbyterians are named for their view on church leadership?the Greek word for elder is presbyteros. Baptists got their name because they have always emphasized the importance of baptism. Each denomination has a slightly different doctrine or emphasis from the others, such as the method of baptism; the availability of the Lord’s Supper to all or just to those whose testimonies can be verified by church leaders; the sovereignty of God vs. free will in the matter of salvation; the future of Israel and the church; pre-tribulation vs. post-tribulation rapture; the existence of the “sign” gifts in the modern era, and so on. The point of these divisions is never Christ as Lord and Savior, but rather honest differences of opinion by godly, albeit flawed, people seeking to honor God and retain doctrinal purity according to their consciences and their understanding of His Word. --- The Downside of Christian Denominations:

There seems to be at least two major problems with denominationalism. First, nowhere in Scripture is there a mandate for denominationalism; to the contrary the mandate is for union and connectivity. Thus, the second problem is that history tells us that denominationalism is the result of, or caused by, conflict and confrontation which leads to division and separation. Jesus told us that a house divided against itself cannot stand. This general principle can and should be applied to the church. We find an example of this in the Corinthian church which was struggling with issues of division and separation. There were those who thought that they should follow Paul and those who thought they should follow the teaching of Apollos, 1 Corinthians 1:12, "What I am saying is this: each of you says, “I’m with Paul,” or “I’m with Apollos,” or “I’m with Cephas,” or “I’m with Christ.” This alone should tell you what Paul thought of denominations or anything else that separates and divides the body. But let’s look further; in verse 13, Paul asks very pointed questions, "Is Christ divided? Was it Paul who was crucified for you? Or were you baptized in Paul’s name?” This makes clear how Paul feels, he (Paul) is not the Christ, he is not the one crucified and his message has never been one that divides the church or would lead someone to worship Paul instead of Christ. Obviously, according to Paul, there is only one church and one body of believers and anything that is different weakens and destroys the church (see verse 17). He makes this point stronger in 3:4 by saying that anyone who says they are of Paul or of Apollos is carnal. Some of the problems we are faced with today as we look at denominationalism and its more recent history:

1. Denominations are based on disagreements over the interpretation of Scripture. An example would be the meaning and purpose of baptism. Is baptism a requirement for salvation or is it symbolic of the salvation process? There are denominations on both sides of this issue and have used the issue to separate and form denominations.

2. Disagreements over the interpretation of Scripture are taken personally and become points of contention. This leads to arguments which can and have done much to destroy the witness of church.

3. The church should be able to resolves its differences inside the body, but once again history tell us that this doesn’t happen. Today the media uses our differences against us to demonstrate that we are not unified in thought or purpose.

4. Denominations are used by man out of self-interest. There are denominations today that are in a state of self-destruction as they are being led into apostasy by those who are promoting their personal agendas.

5. The value of unity is found in the ability to pool our gifts and resources to promote the Kingdom to a lost world. This runs contrary to divisions caused by denominationalism.

I remember other story of the book (The Heavenly Man) of brother Yun, who is one of China’s house church leaders, a man who despite his relative youth has suffered prolonged torture and imprisonment for his faith. By God’s miracle, he had escaped from the most fortified prison in China and settled in Germany in 1998. In his book, it says: Throughout the 1970s there had been just one house church movement in China. …. Suffering had broken down all denominational walls in the Chinese church. When China’s borders started to open up in the early 1980s, many foreign Christians wanted to know how they could help the church in China. ……. However, after a few years these same mission organizations started putting other books at the top of the bags of Bibles. These were books about one particular denomination’s theology, or teaching that focused on certain aspects of God’s Word. ….. After a while our foreign friends started giving even more things to us. They gave money, cameras, and other things they felt were necessary to help us serve the Lord more effectively. I clearly remember how this caused division among the leaders. In our evil hearts we asked, “Who get the most books?” or, “What was that brother giving more money than me?”

It was a real mess. Within a year or two the house churches in China split into ten or twelve fragments. This was how so many different house church networks came into existence. It was easy for a house church to split. …. Within a short time a new movement would be established. In their zeal to help, our foreign brothers were actually causing the house churches to split and be weakened. “For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.” Romans 10:2.

There are some differences between LRC and other denomination churches (especially, Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist). First, Local Church doesn’t have pastors or priest. LRC follows Priesthood of all believers in the bible. So, all members are encouraged to participate in bible studies and prepare for Lord’s Day’s prophesying (preaching?). Most commonly heard after I came to LRC was Christ is the Head of the Church, and we are the body of Christ.

Then, what LRC says about Church? At LRC, almost at every Lord’s Day or bible study, they talk about Christ, The Spirit, Life, and The Church. It is so important that Christ and the Church are not separable in Christianity. Let me quote one of Witness Lee’s articles about the Church:

“It is not merely because we have been saved and meet together that we are the church. We cannot say that this is wrong, but is a very superficial understanding. We need to see that the normal, genuine, proper, and real church comes out of this great power… This church is the Body of Christ, “the fullness of the One who fills all in all” (Eph. 1:23). Christ, who is the infinite, unlimited God, is so great that He fills all things in all things. Such a great Christ needs the church to be His fullness for His complete expression. This church comes into being… from the power of the resurrected, ascended, and enthroned Christ, who is now the Head over all things to the church. Ephesians 1:22 does not say that Christ has been made head over all things for the church, but to the church… “To the church” implies a kind of transmission… In this transmission the church shares with Christ all His attainments: the resurrection from among the dead, being seated in His transcendency, the subjection of all things under His feet, and the headship over all things. Such a church is Christ’s Body, His fullness.

We all must realize that nothing of our natural life, nature, or makeup, nothing of our natural being, is a part of the church. Only the very portion of Christ that has been wrought into us is a part of the church…… Regardless of how many years you have been saved, how much you love the Lord, how spiritual you are, or how much growth in life you have, as long as you are not for the church, there is something wrong. God’s intention is not merely to save us, nor is it merely that we be spiritual or love Him. God’s intention is to work the resurrected, ascended, and enthroned Christ, who is the Head over all things, into us to make us a part of the church. We all need to see the church in this way.” ― Witness Lee

You may not understand above article. I also have been known the Church superficially and in concept and in doctrine. But, I started to understand about the Church after reading Watchman Nee & Witness Lee’s books and bible study. If you study ecclesiology (church), and attend the LRC meetings, you may understand better.(to be continued)

기억에 남는 교회에 대한 책들 중에 대천덕 신부(R. A. Torrey III)의 "토지와 자유(The land & biblical economics)"라는 책이 있습니다.

(The Jesus I never knew)"라는 책이었습니다.

Moses' Essay on Local Church(1)

Introduction – In Fall 2010, I came to know “Local Church” which I even hadn’t heard for last 48 years in my church life. First, I read books of Watchman Nee, Witness Lee, and I even went small meetings of brothers in Local Church. After I read a few books and attended meetings, I felt their belief was pure and biblical, and I wanted to know more about local church.

However, I was cautious and had a doubt about them because I didn’t have any knowledge about them. So, I searched internet, read books, attended their bible studies, home meeting, and even attended Lord’s Day table meetings (Sunday worship). As I get to know more, I felt this meeting was based on biblical teachings. A couple of times, I took my daughter (Eunice) to Lord’s Day table meetings, and asked her opinion. She felt they were true believers and wanted to go this church after a couple of youth meetings on Saturdays. So, I and Eunice started to go to Church in Cypress starting January, 2011.

However, I had some uneasyness regarding criticism on Local churches on the internet that A. Local church insists one church on one locality, criticism on Catholic churches and denomination churches. And, it took additional a few months to understand better about local church through reading books, attending bible studies. Also, I had a dilemma how to explain about “A” because it is not easy to understand about ecclesiology (church). Even, some brothers said it took a few months to a few years to understand “Church” in the bible.

So, as far as I know, I assume most people I know do not know about “Local Church.” When I asked to family friends and some pastors about “Local Church”, most of them didn’t know at all, and even those who heard about “Local Church” had a very superficial knowledge. So, I would like to tell my personal experience and knowledge as briefly as I can about “Local Church” after attending for about one and a half year.

For most of people, they think and experience based on their culture and cultural environment they were brought up. And the culture and cultural environment becomes their norm in their life.

Naturally, our faith also, will be influenced by our culture and cultural environment. I still remember a book by Pastor Jae Chul Lee - which said that one American missionary described Korean Christians as – non-biblical and cultic at some point because Koreans are culturally Confucius, philosophically Buddhism, and spiritually shamanism.

Then, we cannot say American or European churches and theologies are all biblical either. In church history, they had been fighting each other even in 2nd – 4th century for Judaic or Hellenistic interpretations. In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. The problem was that there was nothing intrinsically Christian about Saturnalia. To remedy this, these Christian leaders named Saturnalia’s concluding day, December 25th, to be Jesus’ birthday. And I also have started to doubt about my faith and church life. I had these doubts for a long time, but I wanted to find out more earnestly since a few years ago (I had more time reading starting 2007 because of slow economy). As I read books and bible, I started to realize that many believers (including me) believe Christian culture as gospel. If we attend church service every Sunday, offering, serving, praying, reading bible, we think we are good Christians.

How about churches? If a church belongs to certain denomination, then is this church becomes biblical church? If a pastor were graduated certain seminary and ordained by certain denomination, then is this pastor becomes biblical pastor? Many Christians and pastors criticize and concern about degradation of modern churches. But, is this degradation take place because of some pastors, elders or some Christians?

12 years ago, a famous spiritual book author, pastor, seminary professor, Richard Foster, came to Bethel Korean Church, and gave a lecture. I was serving youth group at that time, and I bought a few books of his. I still remember one passage that many churches in these days repeat certain programs to church members, but more important thing is helping people to grow spiritually. When I read this book, I had questions that then teaching doctrine, discipleship, or tress Dias are not for spiritual growth? At that time, I thought spiritual growth meant more like attending bible study & prayer meetings, offering and serving at church activities & ministries. Actually, many pastors taught that way too.

Another book I remember was “The land & biblical economics” by Rev. R.A. Torrey III. If I quote some passages about church,

“A few world about the Christian church and the Bible land laws. For 3 centuries Christians practiced the “free will jubilee” (sharing their goods voluntarily) and even emperor Constantine felt obliged to recognize Christianity. However, nothing was said about changing the land laws. When Rome conquered Carthage 200 years before Christ, the laws of Baal, under which Carthage had been governed from the time it was settled by Jezebel’s relatives at the time of Ahab, stimulated the greed of many Romans. In time the old Roman system was replaced by the Baal system and the sturdy independent farmers of Italy became serfs on the estates of the new landowning class. The same system which “found Rome brick and left it marble” also led to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. But the church did not offer to change it. On the contrary, The Church became dominated by the landlords to the extent that all of North Africa rebelled against Christianity and became Mohammedan under the slogan (taken from the Bible). “The land belongs to God”. The same pattern was repeated in the Middle East. …………. But by the 16th century, when the Anabaptists (modern Mennonites) called for Biblical land reform, both Catholics and Protestants persecuted them ruthlessly. In nearly all of Europe the Church had became the biggest landlord. It the wars between Protestant and Catholic the real issue was not religion at all but land.

Henry George also said in his book “Thy Kingdom Come”

Early Christianity did not mean, in its prayer for the coming of Christ’s kingdom, a kingdom in heaven, but a kingdom on earth. If Christ had simply preached of the other world, the high priests and the Pharisees would not have persecuted Him, the Roman soldiery would not have nailed His hands to the cross. Why was Christianity persecuted? Why were its first professors thrown to wild beasts, burned to light a tyrant’s gardens, hounded, tortured, put to death, by all the cruel devices that a devilish ingenuity could suggest? Not that it was a new religion, referring only to the future. Rome was tolerant of all religions. It was the boast of Rome that all gods were sheltered in her Pantheon; it was the boast of Rome that she made no interference with the religions of peoples she conquered. What was persecuted was a great movement for social reform – The Gospel of Justice – heard by common fishermen with gladness, carried by laborers and slaves into the Imperial city. The Christian revelation was the doctrine of human equality, of the fatherhood of God, of the brotherhood of man. It struck at the very basis of that monstrous tyranny that then oppressed the civilized world; it struck at the fetters of the captive, at the bonds of the slave, at the monstrous injustice which allowed a class to revel on the proceeds of labor, while those who did the labor fared scantily. That is the reason why early Christianity was persecuted. And when they could no longer hold it down, then the privileged classes adopted and perverted the new faith, and it became, in its very triumph, not the pure Christianity of the early days, but a Christianity that, to a very great extent, was the servitor of the privileged classes. And, instead of preaching the essential fatherhood of God, the essential brotherhood of man, its high priests engrafted on the pure truths of the Gospel the blasphemous doctrine that the All-Father is a respecter of persons, and that by His will and on His mandate is founded that monstrous injustice which condemns the great mass of humanity to unrequited hard toil. There has been no failure of Christianity, The failure has been in the sort of Christianity that has been preached.

Another book I remember was “The Jesus I never knew” of Philip Yancy. I think I read this book about ten years ago. After I read this book, I had a curiosity and a desire to find out the Jesus I never knew. I thought it would be my life-time spiritual journey to know better & deeper to know Jesus. And because of these questions, I read different Christian books and even other religion books including Confucius, Buddhism, Islam, and New Ages. And these books slowly made me to see the Christianity in different perspectives. What I realized was that when the teachings of different religions were distorted when the teaching was deteriorated or mixed with the culture. So when we see the religion, we see the visible culture instead of the invisible real truth in it.

French historical theologian, Jacques Ellul, said in his book “The Subversion of Christianity” that….

We set up pastoral positions or benefices with rectors and bishops, etc. We then fill these posts with people we think suitable. But this is the opposite of the movement presented in the Epistles, in which the Holy Spirit movement presented in the Epistles, in which the Holy Spirit gives to the church people who have the gift of love or the word or teaching, and the church has to find a place for them even if it had not anticipated doing so. … No doubt some will reply that God is not a God of disorder, but a God of order. Of course he is. Unfortunately the whole of the Old Testament shows us that God’s order is not that which we conceive and desire. God’s order is not organization and institution (cf. the difference between judges and kings). It is not the same in every time and place………. Thus, if his church wants to be faithful to his revelation, it will be completely mobile, fluid, renascent, bubbling, creative, inventive, adventurous, and imaginative. It will never be perennial, and can never be organized or institutionalized. ….but because it is alive; it is Life – that is, as mobile, changing, and surprising as life. If it becomes a powerful fortified organization, it is because death has prevailed….. The body of Jesus is undoubtedly a human body like any other. His blood circulation and digestion obey normal physiological laws. This is not affected by his divine sonship. He knows hunger and fatigue. He suffers, etc., as all others do. Yet in and under this, with no bodily change, the Holy Spirit intervenes, God himself in his totality. ….. It is more satisfying for Christians to build up an organized church, Christian institutions, a Christian society and politics. Subversion takes place, not because society is wicked, but because revelation is socially intolerable. …. We are possessed by an obsessional desire to justify ourselves, to declare that we are righteous, to be righteous in our own eyes, to seem to be righteous in the eyes of others, of neighbors and acquaintenance, and finally to be declared righteous by the whole group to which we belong. In human conduct and sociological movements this thirst for self-justification is constant and fundamental.

When I came to know “Local Church” and books of Watchman Nee & Witness Lee, I searched sites of local churches whenever I have a time because I didn’t know anything about them. There were some negative sites about them. Also, there were sites that “Local Church” was orthodoxy and evangelical at Christian Research Institute and Fuller Theological Seminary.

When I started know about “Local Church”, my major concern was why they had been known as “cult” for last 30 years. And, what made them now considered orthodoxy. Also, most Christian friends I know didn’t know “Local Church” or Watchman Nee or Witness Lee. So, I kept asking to different pastors, elders or those who had been in church life for a long time. Most of them didn’t know about “Local Church”, but some of them said they hadn’t visited “Local Church”, but they know some of them through business or personal friendship, and they described them as good Christians. So, I decided to attend their meetings and study more about them.

At that time, I also read articles in Christian newspapers through internet. I read an article about debate between “Local Church” in Korea and Rev. Sam Kyung Choi of Korean Presbyterian general meeting(통합 총회). Those who have seen this article may know the story. In 1990s, Korean Presbyterian Tong Hap (one of the largest denomination in Korea) labeled “Local Church” as “cult”. So, “Local Church” requested debate to Tong Hap, and Rev. Sam Kyung Choi said the trinity of “Local Church” as modalism, but, Rev Choi’s argument was not correct. Instead, his belief of trinity was turned out as tritheism (threegods).

So, Rev. Choi and Tong-Hap were humiliated and criticized by other denominations. Even, Christian newspaper articles criticized big denomination churches for the way of research and labeling “cult” easily for political reason without in-depth study.(to be continued)
